Diwali!

Yet another wonderful aspect of Montessori education is how we celebrate cultures from around the world.   We love to learn about many celebrations and festivals throughout the year in a multi-sensory manner.  In doing so, the children glean an impression and appreciation for the rich, cultural diversity that makes up our world.  Recently MFS celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights.  By tasting delicious fruits, smelling fragrant spices,  feeling beautiful, hand-stitched fabrics and hearing traditional music and stories we explored the culture of India.  What a bright and colourful week it was.  Happy Diwali!

Harvest Time

Despite the cooler temperatures we continue to be busy both indoors and out!

We've been harvesting dry bean pods and saving seeds.  It's always so exciting to crack those pods & see the beautiful seeds inside!

We've also been using all of those delicious apples we picked at Avalon Orchards to make apple sauce and apple/carrot muffins!  Mmmmm.....

We've been beautifying our Children's Garden by planting some lovely perennials.  Lavender is our favourite!

As well as taking nature walks to enjoy the gorgeous colours and neighbourhood friends who share their gardens!  :o)

Hooray for Harvest Time!

It's apple season!

I love autumn!  Not only are the colours spectacular but so is the harvest!  To celebrate this season of bounty my MFS friends & I took a trip to Avalon Organic Apple Orchard to pick some delicious, ripe, red apples.  It was a glorious day!

Rainbow Smoothie

To finish off this beautiful, sunshiny week my friends and I were out in the garden.  We decided to harvest some kale.  For the past few days we have been talking about eating all the colours of the rainbow to keep our bodies healthy and happy.  That gorgeous, green kale would be a perfect addition to our cool Organic Rainbow Smoothie!  Here's our recipe:

Organic Rainbow Smoothie

1 peach (skin & all!)
1 apple (cored but not peeled)
1 banana
half a cup blueberries (we used frozen ones)
6 strawberries
1 date (soaked overnight...you can use unsoaked too)
4 small-med. sized kale leaves
about 4 Tbls. hemp seeds
about 3/4 cup cold soy milk (we used So Nice original)
 room temp. water to thin

Toss it all into a mighty blender (We love the Vitamix) and zoom it up.
Enjoy it with friends!  :o)

Getting everything ready....

Beautiful kale from the garden...

Ripping up the kale is fun...

Look at all those colours.....

Why Choose Montessori?

This is a fantastic video to see why you should choose a Montessori education for your child.  Check it out!

Mother's Day Tea

Having family members come into the classroom is such a treat!  We like to make our guests feel special and welcome.  For Mother's Day the children hosted their Moms for a lovely "Tea."  We pressed tiny violets and blue bells for cards, 'podgeyed' colourful pots for beeswax tea lights and baked the most delicious, lemony loaf....all to show our Moms how much we love them!  :o)
The final touch was choosing some work to "teach" our guests.  Each child picked a few favourites they wanted to present.  The children were absolutely giddy with anticipation!  Finally...the Mother's Day Tea arrived.  I was so glad to be there, camera in hand, to capture the joy, love and fun that filled the classroom.  It was a beautiful day.
